FYO is Western Sydney’s very first String orchestra for youth aged 9 to 24, from the suburbs to the West of Parramatta: Toongabbie, Constitution Hill, Wentworthville, Westmead and Pendle Hill.
The purpose of the orchestra is to provide life changing learning experiences in leadership and great orchestral and choral music. The FYO program aims also to build capacity and unity in the diverse community, around the common sense of purpose of an orchestra for the children and youth. Play the video here
The Freedman Youth Orchestra is named in honour of Australian philanthropist Lawrence Freedman who sponsors the orchestra.
Laurence is the founder of the company Equitilink (with Brian Sherman, another significant philanthropist) and contributes to music, visual arts, medical research and disadvantaged kids through the Freedman Foundation. He also funds the Music Council of Australia Freedman Fellowships, as well as its Ignite program which takes music performances into disadvantaged schools.
The Parramatta West Children's Orchestra is funded by NSW Government through the Stronger Communities Fund and supported through a City of Parramatta Council Community Grant. It is also supported by philanthropy from companies, trusts and foundations and individuals donors.
